Younes Amraoui

Algeria

Younes Amraoui is a fresh graduate in applied statistics from the National Graduate School of Statistics and Applied Economics in Algeria, he is highly motivated by the fact that, in the words of the Global Bank: “we are drowning in data and starving for insight”. That is why he always work hard to become a better statistician and data scientist to help his country gain insight into the real-world problems that every country has to face.
Besides his education, Younes always makes sure to devote extra time for volunteering and social activities. In his sophomore year of college, he worked as a social secretary for his university social club and he participated in several national exchange programs that tend to broaden the students’ horizon and help them make connections with students from different backgrounds. In addition, he volunteered as a translator for TED Conferences for two years where he used to translate, transcribe, and review TED Talks in three different languages; Arabic, English, and French. He also served as a mentor to new volunteers at the same time. In his leisure time, Younes enjoys reading Young Adults, his favorite author is Angie Thomas. Moreover, Younes had the chance to take one of his leisure time activities to a whole different level and experience it beyond its simple meaning through his regular participation in an international sport event; the Sahara Marathon, a solidarity race for the refugee children of Western Sahara, the only country in Africa that did not obtain its formal independence. It was not just a simple race, but a chance to give visibility to the Sahrawi cause and raise awareness about a 42-year-long conflict. This is how Younes embarked on a quest to stand up for human rights and promote the message of peace and love.
