Ousman J Sanyang

Gambia

My name is Ousman J Sanyang born January 12th, 1993 in The Gambia; My Family is made up of my Mum, Dad, one elder Sister and a younger Brother. Both my Parents are educated and working as Civil Servants in The Gambia, My Mum a Teacher and My Dad Supervisors at the Gambia Telecommunications Company Limited. Therefore my love for education and Determination to achieve success through education takes root from my Educated and Supportive parents. Am exposed to education at an early age of 3, my mum takes me along to School when she is going which also contributes significantly to my love for Education and more importantly my interaction with teachers since my Early age . I was formally registered as other students in class one at Kabafita primary school and my mum helps me every night with my Homework before going to bed which helps me become an outstanding Student. Every two weekends my mum makes sure that my hair is barbed neatly and my uniforms, shocks and t-shirts are washed and ironed properly. I caught the admiration of the head teacher in my school due to my commitment to work and neatness. In my sixth grade, year 2004, I was voted in as the school head boy but my Parents didn’t support the idea because it demands a lot of time. That was my final year in primary school and we were busy reading for the West African primary school leaving certificate examination to earn me a place in an accredited junior school because the competition is always very high. With my continues struggling and supportive parents I earned myself Admission to the best catholic junior secondary school in the west coast region of The Gambia , Presentation Upper Basic School. After three years of junior secondary schooling in year 2008 I sat to the West African Junior Secondary School examination to enroll into a senior secondary school. Again I came out with flying colors and gain admission in an outstanding and competitive senior school in The Gambia, St. Augustine High School in year 2008. It was very competitive but I maintain consistency in terms of performance and discipline throughout my school career. In 2011 I sat to the West African Senior Secondary School Examination, which automatically gains me admission at the University of The Gambia to read Management to prepare me for my future dream. I volunteer in the summer Mathematics and Science program spare headed by University of The Gambia Science Student Association in collaboration with the youth care foundation. I did a three month Human Resource internship at The Gambia Telecommunications Company Limited (Gamtel), before I was finally staffed in 2016 as the Human Resources Information Systems Officer. Last year in 2018 my responsibilities has been change and I was designated as Administrative Officer. I have grown-up to be a good communicator and a team player with honesty, integrity and a strong work ethic. I am someone who is able to learn quickly and adapt to new environments and perform under pressure. I love challenges, exploration, and I am always eager to learn, engage in numerous activities simultaneously which has helped me to learn to be sharp and versatile in many ways.

To involve in Social work has developed increasingly ever since I understood that we lived in a world where everything was due or connected to helping one and other. What really interest me in Social Work are its complexity, nature and its unpredictability. Very few would have been able to foresee the current financial crisis and natural disasters a few years ago. Even though an American centralized crisis was predictable due to the subprime loans, no one could have predicted that the financial crisis in the United States would shatter the world’s entire banking system and economy. The financial crisis shows how globalization, in the last 30 years has deeply interconnected the economy of countries from developed to developing.

Most of the average citizens of my country has hit and fall below the poverty line. Organizations including the one am working for have deemed it necessary to innovative processes and management that can drive down costs and improve productivity to generate profit, so as the Corporate Social Responsibility can increase.

I am currently the Administrative Officer of The Gambia Telecommunication Company Limited. My office handles the Corporate Social Responsibility. I facilitate the allocation of the budgeted amount for CSR annually. Most households my country are hugely affected during the rainy season. Gambia typically has an average of 3 to 4 months of rain season but with huge storms.
Because of poverty, most settlements are destroyed and affected by the storm. GAMTEL my company through my office, approved to distribute and support both morally and financial to the annual affected.

Aside, from my full time employment which involve a huge practice of Social work. I am also part of our community development projects. Gambia is a developing country and storage of water is the order of the day. Our projects developed and facilitate community local taps and provide fresh water to the mass.

I decide to attend this conference to provide me with theoretical understanding, an in depth idea of practical approaches in aiding social work decisions and skills to enable me to develop an expertise in the core areas of Social work development processes. To be equipped with an understanding of their relationship with my organizational capabilities, to provide an assessment vehicle that will help my organization assess its capabilities and make improvements, and also to improve predictions of our community project outcomes.

After finishing my Bachelors studies I then spend some years working in public sector institutions so as to gain additional experience, learn from others, and develop the level of competence that will place me in an optimal position for my future endeavors.
In time, I hope to be behind the unraveling of the crisis that is currently relapsing our economy, also with the hope of managing my own Social work Corporation.
I feel strongly that I am an excellent candidate for the Peace Ambassador that will provide superior Social Work tips and the learning will help me to build the key qualities of self-motivation and confidence, as well as practical skills and professional knowledge in the field of Social Work in General.
