Ibrahim Mohamed

United States of America

My name is Ibrahim Mohamed and a Somali citizen currently living in the United States. I consider myself a global citizen in many ways. I left Somaliland in 2014 to go to the United World College in Costa Rica for high school and studied there for two years. UWC Costa Rica is part of the 18 UWC schools across the globe that includes more than 60,000 alumni around the world. While each campus is distinct. The students were from almost 90 different countries from all over the world, and because of that, I have experienced the power of diversity and the fact that when people understand each other better and see each other as less “foreign” or different, then we can work together to solve small problems in the school community and large problems in the wider world. Then In 2016 I moved to the US to pursue a college education and attended Connecticut College. Here I studied and double majored in Political Science and Global Islamic studies with a minor in Arabic. Through my education, I have always been involved in leadership positions where I was able to work and help communities. I have worked with both international and local organizations. I have worked UNRWA in Lebanon and the Palestine refugees in Lebanon. I have also lived in Tunisia and worked with The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights(FTDES)which is working, as a nongovernmental organization that aims to defend the economic and social rights of people at the national and international levels. Currently, I am the Chair of the UWC Somaliland National Committee which is responsible for selecting students from Somaliland for entry to UWC Colleges across the world every year. I am the chair of the Somaliland National Committee, consisting of 7 people, working to spread information about the UWC movement, Promote UWC to prospective students, and representing UWC in Somaliland. Through this program, we have sent over 15 students to UWC school all over the world with full scholarships in countries like Japan, Costa Rica, Tanzania, India, Germany, China, and many more countries. Our goal is to produce the next global leaders who believe in the power of peace and work with people from all kinds of different backgrounds. Because I am a UWC alumni myself I decided to come back to this organization lead them. I am also currently a teacher at The Country School at Madison, Connecticut. As an Elmore Leadership teaching Fellow, I will participate in The school’s-wide Elmore Leadership Program which develops students into civic-minded citizens who will become tomorrow’s leaders, as well as participating and teaching in Cultural Arts and Global Studies instruction and joining student IDEA Alliance and Faculty and Staff IDEA Alliance work toward diversity and inclusion. Finally, I truly see myself being a public servant and help others through education, dialogue, and creating global citizens where people across the world come together to shape our future and build our children and the next generations a peaceful world where they don’t have to worry wars and conflicts.
