Somaliland

Mukhtar Y. Mohamed was born in Hargeisa, the capital city of former British Protectorate and currently self-declared independence state of Somaliland. He is a lawyer and also, he is a human rights, development and rule of law activist. He has a degree in Law from University of Hargeisa school of Law and this moment he is a candidate of master’s in international human rights laws at Mekelle University of Ethiopia. He is co-founder and chairperson of the local Human rights NGO which has named “Sharcimaal Association”. Mukhtar has participated sum of development activities in his society. In his tenure, he developed some contributions for how to understand the principles of human rights in his society, for that reason, he succeeded to translate into Somali language with Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) one of the major international human rights instruments.

besides, he translated into Somali language with African Union Constitutive Act which contributed in order to understand easily how to work with African Union and its organs. The main intention behind the translation of the AU’s constitutive act has been in order to understand the illegality of impunity and political assassination, acts of terrorism and subversive activities, as well as the effects of illegality of the unconstitutional change of government whose are prohibited under the act; because the understanding by the society for illegality of these actions may contribute sustainable peace among society and it may prevent civil unrest.

Mukhtar also worked as a judge at Labor Dispute Resolution Tribunal in Somaliland. He has had seven years’ experience of labor or employment affairs. Moreover, he wrote more than ten articles and paper discussions on domestic legal issues. In conclusion he is an advocator on eliminating of discrimination based on religion and gender.
