My Name is Ashti Hakim, I am from Kurdistan region of Iraq, Sulaimaniyah city.
I have bachelor degree in Sociology and my major is Social work. For the past 4 years I have been working with NGOs on raising the public awareness, women rights, women empowerment, youth communities, etc.
After graduation, I spent many months serving my community as a volunteer before start working. In my hometown of Sulaimanyah I helped women impacted by violence, and later helped families displaced by the war with ISIS, I daily managed cases, who had mostly survived domestic and gender-based violence that abused, traded, and sexually exploited them even in their families and by their own relatives.
Now, I am working in a youth project which is trains youth through vocational trainings and business startup courses, and we had a lot of success stories that we could made a change in their life.
My home country has many humanitarian issues. In my work, I get to hear so many personal stories of what people need and how their lives have changed. This helps me connect with them on a personal level, which will hopefully prepare me to help others in the future and at home in Kurdistan-Iraq. I love to tell stories, especially individual stories highlighting a community member. It’s always refreshing to hear about what they hope for the future. I feel grateful that my job allows me to bring inspiration to other people as well.
