Abubakar Mbarak is the first Director of the Department of Early Warning and Evaluation (DEWE) at United Nations Youth Association of Kenya (UNYA Kenya). He is responsible for analyzing the state of the youth, providing early warning information and assessing national and regional youth trends to catalyze and promote national cooperation and action on youth. He earned his First Class Honours Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering and Maritime operations from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Prior to joining UNYA Kenya, Abubakar worked for Kenya Ports Authority as an intern in the Marine Engineering department- dealing with Marine safety, risk evaluation and warning, firefighting and lifesaving equipment inspection installation and repair as well as engineering works where he served to provide marine safety warnings and assessing ways of promoting maritime safety and improving action on safety of life at sea for marine engineers and sea farers. He has also worked with Sunfire and Safety Limited as an intern on matters safety engineering, Life Saving Appliance code compliance (LSA code) and marine surveying. He volunteers with Motivational Talks for Youth organization (MTY) as the project manager, whose aim is empowering youth through leadership and innovation at the grassroots level. Abubakar doubles up as an innovator coming up with viable competitive innovations and managed to be among the 100 out of 80,000 startups to be selected all over the world for pitching in Istanbul (Startup Istanbul).He is also a volunteer mentor to a number of youth in the university as well as his home Mombasa on various issues including youth action in nation building, leadership and economic empowerment. He is fluent in English and Kiswahili and has a working knowledge of Arabic.
